The football players that took the field for Boise State University in 2006 were students athletes that weren?t recruited by the Universities with nationally renowned football programs. The documentary Out Of The Blue, A Story About Life and Football is a touching story about these talented athletes who, with the help of a first year head coach, were able to rise above what those believed they could never achieve. That season, Boise State University went on to win the Fiesta Bowl® having a perfect 12-0 regular season record and a BCS busting 43-42 victory over perennial powerhouse Oklahoma in what many consider the greatest college football game ever played. Directed by Boise State University alumn and Hollywood feature-film veteran, Michael Hoffman (Soapdish, One Fine Day, Game 6) this poignant documentary takes viewers into the lives of these players as they discuss what football has taught them, and what the game can teach us all about life.

Out of the Blue takes viewers beyond the game and into the lives of this remarkable group of underdog players and their victorious coach. It investigates the philosophy behind the program that used football to teach the tenets of living a good life. This philosophy is based on blue-collar values such as: family and community, fathers and sons, and success and failure.

Structured around the team?s week in Phoenix, the film explores the lives of many of the players-offensive lineman Tad Miller, whose dad left Boise to train policemen in Iraq, and a core group of underclassmen who grew up together on the tough streets of Compton, finding their way together at Boise while on the road to a surprising victory. The documentary looks at the walk-on players who helped shape the season for the team. These include Colt Brooks, an undersized local kid with a big heart who eventually became the starting line backer and special team captain, and Vinnie Perretta, son of former San Diego Chargers offensive lineman Ralph Perretta (1975-1980) who ended up throwing the touchdown pass in overtime that set up the two point conversion, leading to the infamous Fiesta Bowl victory.

BSU?s bowl game versus Oklahoma became an instant classic and showcased the team?s never-say-die attitude as well as their sandlot energy and imagination. The film also charts the career of Quarterback Jared Zabransky, from his meteoric rise as a sophomore to his meltdown against Georgia and troubled junior year, to his rebirth as a senior and eventual triumph as MVP of the Fiesta Bowl®. Zabransky?s complex personality and dysfunctional background could be compared with Heisman Trophy hopeful Ian Johnson?s hyper-sane, almost detached attitude toward the game.

Last but not least, the documentary also takes an in-depth look at Coach Chris Peterson, who is only one of two coaches since 1900 who has won 12 games in the first team season at the helm of a Division I football team. The film explores the challenges that Peterson faced in becoming a father figure to a hundred young men, while facing the challenge of coping with his eight year old son?s fight with brain cancer.

Out of The Blue: A Story About Life And Football is a heart-wrenching and empowering film that sends messages of hope and inspiration to all. The documentary is a must-see for not only football and sports fans, but for those who believe in never giving up the fight!
